Dell is just about to be the latest to join in the race for this year's most successful Ultra Cheap, Ultra portable laptop as it takes the lid of the Inspiron 910, the latest addition to its widly popular Inspiron range.
According to Gizmodo, the device should be launched this coming Friday in the US of A and although prices have yet to be made public, it is expected to be in the USD 250 to USD 300 bracket.
Allegedly manufactured by Taiwanese Super ODM Compal, the Dell Inspiron 910 is probably the best looking of the lot and certainly sports a more traditional toned-down look compared to the Asus EEE or the MSI Wind.
Gizmodo also has some more details including some closeups of the Inspiron 910 which shows a fairly standard chassis and spec list; An Intel Atom processor, up to 1GB memory, up to 16GB of solid state storage, a 8.9-inch 1024x600 pixel screen (which looks like one of the glossy type), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, a card reader, three USB ports, a webcam and either Windows XP or Ubuntu as operating system.
Arguably Dell has had no choice but to follow the lead of MSI, HP, Acer or Asus as it has the most to lose of the lot. Chances are Dell's own customers may decide to steer clear of its cheap and no-frill entry level laptops like the Vostro series whose prices are dangerously close to the USD 300 ceiling.
Last week, Dell refreshed its Latitude range by introducing the new e-Series, aimed at Business customers but chances are that the latter could potentially be lured by the Inspiron 910 if it is sold at the right price.
There are still no signs of Netbooks on the horizon from Apple, Toshiba and Sony.
