Microsoft is set to introduce a new feature pack for storage that is expected to provide Blu-Ray support in Windows.

With this feature pack which is in Beta testing; Microsoft will become the only major operating system vendor to build native Blu-Ray support with other operating systems still relying on third party tools to achieve the same.

It is interesting to note that Microsoft was clearly supporting the HD DVD format and its new initiative to support Blu-Ray has been welcomed by many.

The feature packs incidentally has three key components which includes an Active Storage Component aimed at locking potable devices like USB flash drives via the means of certification or a password.

It also includes a Smart Card Driver apart from the API that will support "master style optical burning” on Blu-Ray media.

The feature pack is expected to be available for Windows XP, Vista along with Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.
